  1. Plan/Schedule to meet with your child’s teacher before the first day of school.
  2. Announced/Unannounced whatever is appropriate/applicable for you. Do not overlook the policies and procedures of your child’s school but either/or can be most beneficial in getting off to a productive start.
  3. Bring/Provide the teacher/counselor/nurse a profile ) brief or detailed of your child’s history; educational, medical, likes, dislikes, strategies you use at home, etc. Why? Because personnel, staff and teachers may have changed since last school year. More importantly, key and critical aspects involving your child’s growth and development may have changed also. In fact, provide a profile to all working with your child. Everyone on the same page should mean success and progress for your child.
  4. Bring a note pad to take notes during the meeting or anytime you meet with anyone regarding your child. Our intentions are serious as parents, but with all that we juggle, and unless you are using some means of advanced technology to record the meeting—take notes….And KEEP A Copy of EVERYTHING. Copies can be lifesaving proof and evidence.
  5. Establish a method of communication (email, Tuesday Folder, text, cell numbers, school office only) for the school year when a concern, challenge, emergency or question regarding your child surfaces. It is a professional courtesy extended by the parent on behalf of the child as well as a parental must which keeps effective communication at its very best.
